Planning a summer road trip

A longer trip means a few more details to settle before you go. Search now to see live prices for your summer dates, and book as early as you can: availability varies by location, and we can’t guarantee a same-day van.

  • Mileage: at least 100 miles a day are included. Locations charge for miles beyond that, and some offer other mileage programs, so tell the location how far you plan to drive.
  • Coming back to the same place: each location is independently owned and operated, so returning the van to a different city is often difficult. A company with several locations may be able to arrange it.
  • Long rentals: rent for a day, a week or longer.
  • Holiday weekends: in 2027, Memorial Day is Monday, May 31, the Fourth of July is a Sunday, and Labor Day is Monday, September 6. A rental that starts or ends on a Saturday or Sunday needs a quote, so plan a weekday pickup and return (Friday to Monday works) and confirm times with the location.
  • Flying in? If an airport is listed for a location in your search results, that location offers airport pickup and delivery.

Ideas for the trip

Securing the wheelchair

A manually operated wheelchair tie-down system comes with every rental and fits almost all wheelchairs and scooters. Have the location demonstrate the tie-downs and safety belts at pickup. If your chair needs a particular ramp width or interior height, ask before you book. More in how to safely secure a wheelchair in an accessible van.

Summer rental questions

Can I rent a wheelchair van for a summer road trip?

Yes. Search your pickup city and dates to see live prices and availability. A weekday pickup and weekday return is eligible to book online.

How many miles are included?

At least 100 miles per day. Miles beyond that are charged, and some locations offer other mileage programs.

Can I return the van in another city?

Often not, because each location is independently owned and operated. A company with several locations may be able to arrange a one-way rental, so ask when you book.

Can I rent over the Fourth of July?

Yes, with weekday dates. In 2027 the Fourth of July is a Sunday, so a rental that starts or ends that day needs a quote. A Friday-to-Monday or weekday-to-weekday rental is eligible to book online.

How long can I keep the van?

Rentals can run for a day, a week or longer. Search your full dates to see the price.

What do I need to pick up the van?

Each driver needs a valid license and proof of insurance that covers a wheelchair accessible van, must be 21 or older (25 at some locations), and must be present at pickup. Full payment is due at pickup.

Is there a veterans discount?

Several partner brands offer veterans a discount when you book through Wheelchair Getaways. The deals and discounts page lists each brand’s terms. Confirm it with the rental location when you book.
